The Mary Jenkin's Award 2023 - Elspeth Petrie

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Mary Jenkins Award, Mary Jenkins was a keen beekeeper, Assistant Secretary of the Association and an employee at Stirling University.  In the late 1990s she was instrumental in the siting of the first Association apiary in the grounds of Stirling University.  She moved to Cambridge in 2003 and before her departure she donated a trophy in her name which was to be awarded at each AGM to a member who has given an outstanding contribution to the Association.

Elspeth Petrie had been a member of the Association, and the apiary team, since 2018.  She as a familiar face to members when collecting supplies from the apiary and to new beekeepers during their hands on beekeeping training.

Elspeth could sit all day long drinking tea and chatting.  But she was much better at getting things done.  She was very involved in the development work at the apiary, laying concrete and building the equipment shed, which became her domain.  She had the uncanny knack of having the piece of equipment or tool that you needed just at the right moment, and she would soon let you know if you had put it back in the wrong place.

Elspeth let us know in April that she was unwell.  We were allowed a brief moment of sympathy.  She made it easy for us to carry on as usual because that is what she wanted.  Elspeth was with us at the apiary until only a few weeks ago.  Morag, our Chair, had the opportunity to take the Mary Jenkins Trophy to her and let her know that her contribution to the Association was appreciated.  Elspeth sadly passed away on 23rd October peacefully at home with her family by her side.

This year the Mary Jenkins Trophy is awarded to Elspeth Petrie.
